Two Marines
On the porch
In dress uniform.
His mother
Facing them,
Eyes wide,
Face contorted,
Breathing hard through her fingers.
His father beside her
Motioning them into the house.
"Follow them,"
He thinks.
But he can't.
A wave of salt water,
Carries him down the street
And deposits him
Exhausted,
Breathless,
In a field.
Surrounded by
Endless hard grey rows.
The cracked
Reflects the blue sky
And the light veil of cloud
Perfectly.
He cannot see
His reflection
In the soil
Between earth and sky.
His lungs are hard rubber.
It is difficult to breathe.
Bent over
He sees
His brother
Falling.
He feels himself
Falling
Too.
Pitched forward
Feet in the air.
Still standing,
Staring into the earth,
The sky,
The cloud,
The salt sea,
Falling
Into the ruptured soil,
After his brother.
Word comes to a small western town
